Cold Coffee Café Spotlight Interview With Author Andrea Buginsky

Andrea Buginsky is a freelance writer with a BA in Mass Communication-Journalism from the University of South Florida.

She has always wanted to be a published writer, and decided to try to write fantasy books for teens. The Chosen is her first book, and was released on December 14, 2010, to her delight.

Andrea lives in Kansas with her family, which includes her two precious puppies.

What makes you proud to be a writer from Kansas? I moved to Kansas three years ago. It didn’t take me long to fall in love with my new state. I feel like I live in a friendly community, where everyone smiles, holds open doors, and is pleasant to strangers in the stores and restaurants.

What or who inspired you to become a writer?I think my love of books did. I can’t remember a time when I didn’t love to read, and I always had my favorite authors at different stages of life. I didn’t realize I would be an author myself until after college. Writing wasn’t even on the radar until my junior year at college when my plan to work in the medical field didn’t pan out, and I had to switch majors. My sister said, “You love to write, why don’t you do that?” So I decided to major in journalism.

After I graduated, I began looking for online freelance writing opportunities. About a year later, I decided to try to write a book. My first attempt – an adult romance novel – didn’t come together so well. One day, I was watching the movie The Seeker: The Dark is Rising when it occurred to me that I would love to write YA fantasy, which was one of my favorite genres. So I came up with a story idea, and The Chosen was born. It is now over five years old.

Did your environment or upbringing play a major role in your writing and did you use it to your advantage? I wouldn’t say it was my environment or upbringing, although my parents were huge on getting my sister and I to read regularly. It was more of how I grew up. I have a heart condition that I was born with, and it kept me from having a normal childhood. I missed a lot of school and couldn’t participate in several activities my classmates were a part of. I was good at keeping to my own company, which I’ve noticed is a big personality trait for writers. We’re introverts, and very happy to be on our own, lost in thought and hanging out with our characters. I believe growing up the way I did is a big reason I love being a writer now.

When did you begin writing with the intention of becoming published? When the idea for The Chosen came. I knew if I was going to write a book, I wanted to publish it.

What has been your most rewarding experience with your writing process? Creating the storylines and characters in my books. I love them!

What has been your most rewarding experience in your publishing journey? Seeing my books published, and hearing my readers’ reactions to them.

How many published books do you have? 6

Please list the titles of all your books.

The Chosen: The Chosen Series, Book One
Nature’s Unbalance: The Chosen Series, Book Two
Striker’s Apprentice: The Chosen Series, Book Three
Destiny: New Avalon, Book 1
Fate: New Avalon, Book 2
My Open Heart

****** The Chosen and New Avalon series need to be read in numerical order.

Do you come up with your title(s) before or after you write the manuscript? After. Well, more like during.

Please introduce your genre and why you prefer to write in that genre? I write YA fantasy because it’s the genre I love to read. My books don’t have a specific age range, because adults as well as teens are reading them, though I do focus on teens as my readers when I write my books. I also find it easier to write YA because I still feel like a teenager myself. I watch the shows aimed for them, read the books and magazines, and can’t enough of any of it. I’m just a teen at heart.

What was your inspiration, spark or light bulb moment that inspired you to write the book (one book) that you are seeking promotion for? I saw the movie Mists of Avalon when it premiered on TNT several years ago. I have always been a fan of King Arthur stories, but this one really resonated with me. I loved the focus on the female characters, and the magic of the Lady of the Lake and her family. I knew I wanted to create characters that centered around this, but I wanted it to take place in modern time.

What one positive piece of advice would you give to other authors? Never give up. If you want to be an author, than keep plugging away. Write all the stories that are part of you and keep submitting them. If you decide you want to self-publish, go for it! I’m so glad I did.

Who is your favorite author and why? J.K. Rowling. Harry Potter will forever be in my heart, and she did an amazing job creating him. Knowing her background, and how determined she was to bring him to life and introduce him to readers is very inspiring.

Which book title would you like featured in this interview? Destiny
