Cold Coffee Café Author Spotlight Interview With Eileen Thornton

Eileen Thornton lives in Kelso in the Scottish Borders. Though she only began writing in 2001, many of her short stories and article have appeared in several national magazines in the UK. But then she felt the urge to move on to writing something grittier.

Her first novel, The Trojan Project, an action thriller, was published in 2008. "While writing it, I felt I was on the ride of my life. I tried to grab everyone's attention from the very start and give them a rollercoaster read."

Since then Eileen has concentrated on women's fiction. Divorcees.Biz, a novel of fun and romance, was published in 2012 with Only Twelve Days, a heart-warming romance, following in November 2013.

Interview:

What makes you proud to be a writer from Kelso UK? I am proud to write from any location and hope that readers from all over the world enjoy my books.

What or who inspired you to become a writer? It was when I did and Open University Degree course that I became interested in writing. Before that, I could write all I had to say in one paragraph. But doing such a course means you have to answer questions in the form of an essay. You needed to assume that the tutor was hearing the subject for the very first time and had to describe everything in detail

When did you begin writing with the intention of becoming published? That would be in 2001, when I began a writing course with The Writers Bureau.

Did your environment or upbringing play a major role in your writing and did you use it to your advantage? I’m afraid neither of those played a part in my writing. It is simply something I decided to do as a hobby. The tutor of the writing course gave me the confidence to submit my articles and short stories to magazines. As you can imagine I was thrilled when they were accepted for publication.

Do you come up with your title before or after you write the manuscript? With my short stories, I used to come up with a last line for story. Then I would make a story to fit. The last line usually became the title of the story.

Please introduce your genre and why you prefer to write in that genre? The Trojan Project is an all action thriller. I threw everything I could into that novel. I wanted to make people notice me. But my second novel is a fun romance, so I suppose I don’t stick to one genre.

What was your inspiration, spark or light bulb moment that inspired you to write the book that you are seeking promotion for? I think I read a book called “On Writing” by Stephen King. I seemed to tell wannabe writers that they should go for it – take your readers on a roller-coaster. Perhaps not quite in those words, but that is what I took him to mean. That’s when The Trojan Project was born.

What has been your most rewarding experience with your writing process? Getting published! Whether it was my short stories or my novels, it is just so wonderful to know that someone believes in me enough to publish my work.

Have you had a negative experience in your writing career? If so please explain how it could have been avoided? As my writing started out as a hobby, I can’t really say I have had a negative experience. Perhaps having your manuscript returned from publishers with a short note saying, “Very interesting, but not for us” is very disheartening. Especially when you can tell that they haven’t even taken the trouble to read it.

What has been your most rewarding experience in your publishing journey? I guess having a copy of my published novel in my hand was the most wonderful experience.

Have you had a negative experience in your publishing journey? If so please explain how it could have been avoided? I think I answered this two questions above. I don’t have any other negative experiences to mention.

What one positive piece of advice would you give to other authors? I would simply say, don’t give up. Even if it seems that the whole publishing industry is against you, don’t give in. There is a publisher out there looking for you and your work.

Who is your favorite author and why? I enjoy novels by Jeffrey Archer and Lee Child. They write the kind of novels that keep me glued to the book. Brilliant!

The Trojan Project - by Eileen Thornton

A peaceful night is disturbed when a strange green light rises from behind the Cheviot Hills.

To Sarah, the light is frightening enough, but then a green mist descends across the valley. Its swirling tendrils, seeming to bear a life of their own as they snake across the land, can only be an omen of something sinister and evil. Her fears seem confirmed when her husband fails to return home from working on the land, and when he is still missing the following morning, she and her children set out to search for him.

A terrifying discovery awaits her in the valley below her home and before long, Sarah and her children find themselves caught up in a desperate search, not only for her husband Pete but also for the meaning of the green light. Finding herself pursued by the military, she slowly begins to realize her life, and the lives of those she loves, are in mortal danger. The Trojan Project takes us into a nightmare world where no one is quite what they seem, and trust becomes a word with little meaning. Beware the green light in the sky; you never know what it hides!

Author's Excerpts From The Trojan Project:

The sergeant raised his gun. "What the hell?" he said. "Let's shoot the bastards."

Still lying on the ground, Pete waited for the gun to go off. This was it then - the end. In a moment or two, it would all be over. During those few seconds, his life played out before him like a film. Pictures of his wife and children flashed through his mind, as he braced himself for the inevitable. The sergeant wrapped his finger around the trigger and began to squeeze. Pete closed his eyes...but there was only a click. Mercifully, the gun had jammed.

In a desperate effort to stay on his feet, the sergeant grasped out at the police car, only to find his hand disappearing through the open window. Off balance and unable to pull back quickly enough, he felt his fingers sink into the thick melted flesh of what was once a policeman.

"Get it off me! Get it off!" he screamed, as he pulled his arm from the car. He hopped around the road in agony...already his fingers were beginning to blister. Holding out his arm he turned towards the other soldier for help.

But Jones took several steps backwards. "Keep away," he shouted. "Stay away from me!"

The men could only watch as the flesh on the sergeant's fingers began to melt and drip to the ground. There was a slight hiss as it hit the road's surface. Pete closed his eyes. Could the very same thing have happened to his wife and daughters?
