Joanne Simon Tailele's Page

Joanne Simon Tailele was born a mid-west girl in Youngstown Ohio and wrote her first short story at the age of ten in blue colored pencil. It was titled "The Mystery of the Missing Marble."

For most of her life, writing was for pleasure only. In 2010, Tailele wrote her first novel. Two and a half years of edits and rewrites later, it was ready for publication. ACCIDENT is the reincarnated version of that original story. It is available on Amazon in print and e-book.

A second novel, Town Without Mercy released in January 2014. "I love Jodi Picoult's description of her stories, coined 'moral fiction.' I do not expect to change the minds of my readers, however, I hope to cause them to re-think difficult contemporary issues and see them through a different lens."

June 19, 2015, launched the biography of Mari-Rae Sopper, Within Her Grasp. . Her dream was to be a professional gymnast. Sometimes her tumultuous personality got in her way. Her climb was slow, but focused and determined.

Finally, it was all within her grasp. The day was September 11, 2001. Her next women's fiction, Re-homing Pigeon, is about "when international adoption goes all wrong." Cecile Beaudreax thinks her dreams of motherhood are dashed forever when she is trapped in an attic during Hurricane Katrina. But on the other side of the world, six-year-old Natalia Varishnokov is destined to be her daughter. It will take gaining, and losing Natalia for Cecile to finally understand true motherly love.

Ms. Tailele currently resides on Marco Island on the SW Gulf coast of Florida with her husband. The proud the parents of six his-and-hers kids and ten grandkids, they spend their time boating, golfing and enjoying the white sandy beach of Marco Island.

Author Joanne Simon Tailele is past president of Marco Island Writers. She is author of two Contemporary Women’s Fiction titled Accident and Town Without Mercy.

Interview Questions:

What makes you proud to be a writer from Marco Island, Florida? Marco Island is a hot box of talented writers. Perhaps it is because so many of us have retired from previous careers and now have time to devote to writing. I am the president of our local writers group, Marco Island Writers and have the privilege of getting to know many of the members and share our work together.

What or who inspired you to become a writer? I have always wanted to be a writer since my first short story written at the age of ten. The Trixie Beldon books were my first love. But it took me sixty years before I ever attempted to write a full size novel.

When did you begin writing with the intention of becoming published? In 2010, I took on my first NANOWRIMO challenge.

Did your environment or upbringing play a major role in your writing and did you use it to your advantage? I never saw my parents read anything but the newspaper, but I had an active imagination and played with short stories my whole life. I had a fourth grade teacher that encouraged me and I am grateful today that she believed in me.

What has been your most rewarding experience with your writing process? The best thing for me is to have a reader tell me they loved me book, and that they discovered something different about the content of the story.

What one positive piece of advice would you give to other authors? Patience. Once you are done with your story, put it away for a few weeks, then come back and take another look. There will be lots of changes to make. And use an editor. Do not skip this step.

Who is your favorite author and why? By far, Jodi Picoult. I love her books because they are intense like mine and cover modern day issues. She is the queen of research and offers something new to her readers in every story.

Featured Book: Rehoming Pigeon by Joanne Simon Tailele

When Cecile Boudreaux and husband, Armand, adopt six-year-old Natalia from Russia, they think their dreams of being a whole family are complete. But things don't go exactly as planned. Natalia has her own agenda to get back to her brother, Nikolai no matter what. When things reach a breaking point, unthinkable decisions have to be made. It will take love and loss before everyone recognizes the many faces of family.

Review: Joanne Tailele's novel, Rehoming Pigeons: I was happily engaged in the story's clever melding of seemingly unconnected events. And, those taking place inside dark Russia. Not only of the vivid physical descriptions but of the social/political environment of the time. I felt I was actually there experiencing it.

Within Her Grasp by Joanne Simon Tailele

Mari-Rae Sopper knew what she wanted to be since she was ten-years-old, when she watched Nadia Comãneci score that “perfect ten” at the Montreal Olympics. She wanted to be a professional gymnast. So she made a plan.

Driven by excellence and determination, “Mari-Rae put Fremd on the map,” according to Larry Petrillo, her high school coach. She moved on to be a formidable opponent in college gymnasts at Iowa State University and an impressive defense attorney for the Navy JAG core.

Within Her Grasp chronicles Mari-Rae’s journey to reach her dream while battling emotional issues that soared her to the skies and plunged her into the depths of despair, drove her to veer from her plan, but never from her dream.

“A beautiful thing about Mari-Rae was that she did more than get upset when she saw injustice – she acted on many of her convictions. She had an undying belief in doing the right thing, regardless of mainstream thinking.” Jennifer Eichenmueller

“Mari-Rae was known for a dramatic flair. Her letters were no postcards – five pages front and back, hand-written and smeared because she was a lefty. They were her manifestos, read and re-read with notes in the margins, until they were perfect, because she wanted you to know exactly where she stood. And that’s what we could count on, her honest opinion.” Dave Eck

“She lived her life basically like she wasn't going to be here tomorrow. If she believed in something, she went all the way, and I think if more people did that, they'd be happier.” Mari-Rae’s mother, Marion Kminek
