Cold Coffee Cafe Spotlight Interview With Author Martin Hadfield

Author Martin Hadfield is based in Brisbane, Australia and earned his degree in Economics in 1991.

Martin spent many years working and observing life in the office environment in both public and private sector organizations. After sharing some of his eccentric observations with the captive audience in his office, he had an epiphany and realized that people spend most of their time working in offices without even understanding their environment or trying to make it better.

So, now Martin is on a mission to encourage the everyday employee to think more about seeking happiness in the office, a place where we all spend so much of our time. His first book, ‘Everyday Ways To Win In Office Life’ tries to capture the essence of the office workplace and I really hope you enjoy it.

When not writing, Martin is still working amongst the desk bound, observing and conducting new investigations.

Interview:

What makes you proud to be a writer from Brisbane, Australia? It's the opportunity to share my way of looking at the world and hopefully encourage others to think in their own individual ways.

What or who inspired you to become a writer? My father was very clever with words, but never had the opportunities that indie publishing now presents to share his talents.

Did your environment or upbringing play a major role in your writing and did you use it to your advantage? I like to think of myself as a citizen of the world. I'm well-travelled and my experiences have meant that I can bring a viewpoint that is universal to my American and UK cousins. I'm not an Australian writer, I'm a writer from Australia.

When did you begin writing with the intention of becoming published? I wrote a play in my first year of high school and since then have always aspired to be published. (that was quite some time ago) However, other than a few articles here and there I haven't had the time or the opportunity until now.

What has been your most rewarding experience with your writing process? Learning from my editor who added small but important refinements to my work.

What has been your most rewarding experience in your publishing journey? Finally clicking on to Amazon to see my book available for sale. I call it the birth of my 'book baby''!

How many published books do you have? Just the one (so far) but already have plans for number 2.

Please list the titles of all your books: Everyday Ways to Win in Office Life

Do you come up with your title(s) before or after you write the manuscript? During. I find that the title can't be too 'out there' as you still have to come up with something that people can find in a search.

Please introduce your genre and why you prefer to write in that genre? I'd call it Managing Managers. It's a business book for employees that has come out of personal experience.

Which book title would you like featured in this interview? Everyday Ways to Win in Office Life

What was your inspiration, spark or light bulb moment that inspired you to write the book (one book) that you are seeking promotion for? I was made redundant at the end of last year, and after starting in a new role I found myself noticing how unusual and unnatural the office environment really is and that there is no place to get tips on dealing with many office situations as an employee.  Now there is a place!

What one positive piece of advice would you give to other authors? Get into a writing routine. It's tempting to pack it all in when things get tough but if you stick to a routine you can break through to the end.

Who is your favorite author and why? Jonas Jonasson

Everyday Ways To Win In Office Life by Martin Hadfield

The office is a strange and relatively recent phenomenon. It doesn’t matter if your office is large or small, modern or old. Offices are full of unwritten rules on how to behave, what not to say, what to say and how to say it.

This definitely isn’t just another management text that explains how to subdue and exploit your subordinates for personal gain. It’s much better than that.

“Everyday Ways to Win in Office Life” is a travel guide that helps you to navigate your way through the hazards and opportunities of office life. We even get to share a few laughs as we unlock some new tips and insights to make our time at work happier and more rewarding.

This jam-packed, informative read contains everything from how to 'manage your manager' to taking back your personal time and dealing with tired clichés and the latest buzz words.

Regardless of who we all are and what we want, understanding the office environment can help us to survive and even thrive.
