Welcome, Radine Trees Nehring!

Meet Author Radine Trees Nehring

Cold Coffee Café Spotlight Interview With Author Radine Trees Nehring

Radine Trees Nehring's writing career began when she fell in love with the Arkansas Ozarks and wanted to tell people why. Her essays and feature articles about the people, places, and events in her adopted state began selling almost immediately to magazines and newspapers regionally, nationally, and internationally.

Her first book, the non-fiction "DEAR EARTH: A Love Letter from Spring Hollow," sold to a New York publisher and was released in 1995. During that time period she also hosted a fifteen-minute radio program, "Arkansas Corner Community News," reporting news from her area of the Ozarks.

As an avid mystery reader since Nancy Drew days, Radine then decided to try her hand at writing a mystery. The first in her Carrie and Henry "To Die For" amateur detective series came out in 2002, rapidly drawing fans into the mysterious Ozarks and the adventures of Carrie McCrite and Henry King. This led to a continuation of the series.

Radine's written work has earned a number of awards, both nationally and in her home state, and she was the 2011 inductee into the Arkansas Writers' Hall of Fame. She is a member of Ozarks area writers’ organizations, as well as Sisters in Crime, Mystery Writers of America, and Authors Guild, and is a popular speaker and teacher on her favorite topics related to her writing.

Interview:

What makes you proud to be a writer from the Ozarks? Satisfaction at being able to write about my favorite area of the world. I'm glad to have been accepted in this field.

What or who inspired you to become a writer? All that I observed of life in the Arkansas Ozarks rural areas.

Did your environment or upbringing play a major role in your writing and did you use it to your advantage? Upbringing, no, but the environment of the Ozarks, definitely yes.

When did you begin writing with the intention of becoming published? 1985

What has been your most rewarding experience with your writing process? Completing work to my satisfaction, loving the music of the words and the ideas expressed.

What has been your most rewarding experience in your publishing journey? Being inducted into the Arkansas Writers' Hall of Fame, following the names of authors that awed me. How could I be chosen to join them? But--I was.

How many published books do you have? 9

Please list the titles of all your published books. Dear Earth: A Love Letter from Spring Hollow, A Valley to Die For, Music to Die For, A Treasure to Die For, A Wedding to Die For, A River to Die For, Journey to Die For, A Fair to Die For, A Portrait to Die For.

Do you come up with your title(s) before or after you write the manuscript? Both--with "To Die For" being the only set part of my fiction series titles.

Please introduce your genre and why you prefer to write in that genre? Loved reading cozy mysteries for years, so it was natural for me to stay in that tradition.

What was your inspiration, spark or light bulb moment that inspired you to write the book (one book) that you are seeking promotion for? As a lover of the art world, all art museums, and a growing fascination with Crystal Bridges of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas, I decided to undertake the challenge of writing a book set largely at Crystal Bridges.

What one positive piece of advice would you give to other authors? Learn to let your words sing.  Listen to them. (Writing poetry is a big help as a starter.)

Who is your favorite author and why? Mary Stewart.  Love her mysteries.  Her words do sing and I can remember many of her phrases long after I finish a book.

A Fair To Die For by Radine Trees Nehring

It’s October, craft fair season in the Ozarks, and Carrie and Henry are helping their friend Shirley sell her quilts and Baby Cuddlys at the War Eagle Craft Fair. After a mysterious cousin with ties to drug dealers appears, danger stalks the fair. When Carrie is abducted by killers following a breakfast at War Eagle Mill, she’s afraid she won’t escape, because—though her aim in life has always been to help others out of problems—no one who can help her knows where she is. “There is no me out there to help me.”

DEAR EARTH, A Love Letter From Spring Hollow by Radine Trees Nehring

It was to be just a weekend retreat, the cabin Radine Trees Nehring and her husband, John, built with their own hands on the land they bought in the Arkansas Ozarks. All they wanted was a once-a-week refuge from the stress and trials of life in the big city one hundred miles away. But the air, the forest, and the wildlife in the place they named Spring Hollow had a haunting magic they could never quite leave behind when they drove away every Sunday evening. The more they learned about the secrets of nature in their country hideaway, the more reluctant they became to part from it. At last they realized that their hearts were always in Spring Hollow, and that was where they belonged too. They gave up their secure jobs to devote themselves full-time to tending and preserving the beautiful but fast-receding natural world they had come to cherish. Please List Any Awards: Dan Saults for Ozarks Value Writing from Ozarks Writers League, Arkansas Governor’s Award for best writing about the state.

Music To Die For by Radine Trees Nehring

MUSIC TO DIE FOR is set at Ozark Folk Center State Park in remote Stone County, AR. Carrie and several friends have planned a weekend vacation at the Folk Center, where they're signed up for craft classes. Crafts take a back seat to a kidnapping, arson, and murder after Dulcey Mason, four-year old daughter of famous country musicians Chase Mason and Tracy Teal, disappears, and her abductor is found stabbed, his house burned. Romance blossoms again between Carrie and her best friend, Henry King, as they rush to save a child, solve a murder, and repair tragically broken lives. Can they do it before they, too, become victims of MUSIC TO DIE FOR?

by Radine Trees Nehring

Carrie McCrite and her husband, Amos, had dreamed of retiring to a home in the Ozark mountains. After Amos dies in a hunting accident, Carrie decides to go ahead with their dream, but alone. She needs to be someone – to prove she’s a capable woman who can take care of herself. Carrie meets neighbor JoAnne Harrington, a man-hater who certainly provides an example of female independence. When a stone quarry threatens to turn part of their beloved valley into heaps of gravel, the two women and their neighbors band together to fight for their valley. But someone decides JoAnne must die. Carrie feels compelled to find out who killed her friend. That’s what a strong woman would do. Then Carrie’s new neighbor, retired Kansas City Police Major, Henry King, warns her that she, and not JoAnne, may have been the killer’s real target. But that’s ridiculous – isn’t it? And Henry is hiding secrets of his own. How strong can Carrie be? It’s time to find out.
