Elements of a good story (continued)

To continue, my next topic is the hero of a story.  To my way of thinking, he should not be a superman either.  A good hero isn’t someone who is excessively brave or gifted, he is just someone who doesn’t let his fear stop him from doing what he knows he is the only one to can do whatever is needed.  A good hero has flaws, and as was said last time, he is only as good as the villain is bad.  A good hero has his good days and his bad days, but it is his emotional value system that is his…

Buzzing around the buzz words

February 25th. 2017

I launched my latest book, Where the Wicked Dwell, during the week. I used Mailchimp and social media to promote it at a launch price of £0.99. I’ve no way of comparing results with other launches, and I do understand that I could have paid out a lot of money to advertise the launch and see my rankings rise. The highest I did get was 37 in the top 100 paid in the Private Investigators category. I can say I sat proudly above Stephen King and James…

A Flash in the Pan

Flash Fiction is a short—sometimes really short—form of storytelling. The number of words required in flash fiction differs from writer to writer, editor to editor, contest to contest, but some purists insist that it’s a story told in less than 75 words. For less-rigid flashers, anything under 500 words is…

The Essentials of A Good Story -- As I see them

The first thing I look for in a good story are characters that I care about.  It doesn't have to be a good guy, it can be the villain, so long as they are realistic to me.  They can't be superman with no flaws or weaknesses -- after all, even Superman has his Kryptonite he has to contend with.  It has to be someone who has a reason for what he or she does. And just to make it easy to type, I;m going to use the term 'he' to refer to my villain in this piece,  even though it can be of either…

This week in Frontier History

Hello to one and all.  This is my first posting for what I hope will entertain some of you.  I have decided to call it “This week in Frontier History”, and what it will be is a mixture of trivia and historical reporting posted every Sunday.  I have an extensive library of frontier history so I should be able to keep this up for years.  I may even throw in a trivia contest now and then.   I hope this will keep everyone interested and possibly draw a few favorable comments.  We’ll see. …

Getting acquainted

Greetings to one and all.  I am new to the Cafe, so I figure I should introduce myself.  I am a practicing psychotherapist in southern Florida, where I work with families, individuals and children. I am also a certified clinical sexual therapist and work with those individuals dealing with deviant sexual behaviors.  Many of the emotional and behavioral issues I deal with in my practice make their way into the pages of…

From BT to Infinity, wireless and powerless

February 18th.

My Wi-Fi became Wi-Fi-less last Monday, due to the incompetence of BT. There probably isn’t the right time to lose your Wi-Fi, unless it’s during the night when you’re asleep. I had decided to change from SKY to BT, and sorted that out over the phone. The planned change was to be 24th. February. But in their wisdom, BT sent an engineer on the 13th. to make the change at 8am (eleven days early). He brought an old…
