Beyond Words by Diane O'Key

The last thing Abby Mathieson wants is what she most needs: a take-care-of-the-business-end partner. Emotional and financial demons spur her dreams of self-reliance and her vow to continue her aunt's legacy of Beyond Words, a Blue Ridge Mountains book-and-gift shop.

Trey Dalton, sexy CPA with a heart of gold and backbone of steel, wants nothing more than to return to his home in sunny Florida. But he made a death-bed promise to help Abby succeed... whatever it takes.

Conflict and sexual tension intensify as they wrangle over the shop and deal with Abby's quirky best friend and the incorrigible resident parrot. Abby's sworn to trust no man, but Trey has her tangled up worse than knotted fishing line. If she can't overcome her insecurities before he unravels her finances and leaves town forever, her precious independence will cost her a love Beyond Words.

Charming, heartwarming romance

January 12, 2015

Format: Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase

A thoroughly enjoyable read. No big blow-out dramatics, just two good people learning to love each other despite the obstacles. Some readers might find Trey too nearly perfect – personally, I have no problem at all with perfect men. The small mountain town really comes alive, and I wish I could spend an afternoon shopping at Beyond Words. Maybe an afternoon every week! A great book to warm up with on a cold winter evening.

Fantastic romance!

November 29, 2014

Format: Kindle Edition

Started with a bang!

This was an adorable and very fun romance. I loved the characters and the depth of their issues and strengths. I immediately enjoyed reading about these characters and although past my deadline (sorry Diane!!) I wanted to soak in every word!

Issues can lead to romance

I love how we all have issues. Every single one of us in some way. This is so true in this book. The characters were not so flawed that they could not see beyond the damage but they had some things to get over. Especially Abby! She has some real issues but it is the fact that she tries so hard to get through them that makes me love her. She’s a really real character which brought a lot of satisfaction to the reading.

And not to leave out sexy hunks, Trey doesn’t necessarily have issues to get over but to get through to Abby he has to deal with HER issues. He’s not only smart and sexy, he’s patient! But he’s not perfect and he admits his flaws. /SWOON! No wonder Abby couldn’t keep her eyes or mind off of him. OR lips! ;)

Romantic with a lot of funny

The side characters adding quite a bit of hilarity. I laughed out loud often at Mell. Everyone needs a friend like this gal and I could see why Abby keeps her around. More importantly Mell has been through her own crap so she is able to give Abby some well needed advice.

The down

Only one thing kept me from full out loving this and that thing happened about 80% in. I think that this isn’t something that would keep people from reading this fabulous story though. So it did bring down my assessment a tad but not so much that I wanted to put the book down. Not even close.

In short!

Cute, sexy, funny! The plot is interesting but it was the characters that made me want to keep reading. The last two words were perfect and amazing!

Received by the author for an honest review.

Beautifully crafted love story

November 19, 2014

Format: Kindle Edition

Beyond Words is one of those books where you sigh, then simply sink into the world the author has created. The smell of autumn, the warmth of a fireplace, the color of fall foliage as we drift into the winter holidays—all this served with huge doses of sizzle from Abby and Trey as they fight the attraction between them. With the sparks they create, these two could light one of the specialty pumpkin candles in Abby’s small Blue Ridge Mountains bookstore. Toss in a cheeky parrot and Mellie, the quirkiest best friend ever, and Beyond Words is one of those books that will make you laugh, reach for the tissues, and applaud. This beautifully crafted love story has it all—heart, humor, and ambience. I can’t wait for another book by Diane O’Key!

This book made me miss NC.

June 22, 2015

Format: Kindle Edition

I loved Beyond Words for so many reasons. First... it brought back memories of my college years. I went to school in a little mountain college town in North Carolina... right off the Blue Ridge Parkway. I could immediately picture Beyond Words being one of my very favorite places to go on Main Street. I could perfectly imagine Abby getting the shop ready for it's grand re-opening day before the beautiful autumn colors of the mountains brought in all of the mountain tourists... right after the college students all settled in to classes. I would have loved to have gotten a job working with Abby in her shop. The whole little book shop with locally made gifts just has such appeal to me. It's kind of a wonder to me that I never actually did work in a book shop or library.

I loved Abby's character. Honestly, just everything about her. She was just so real. Her independence, her insecurities, her love for her aunt, her relationship with her best friend, her reactions to Trey. Each bit of her made me love her more. I have to say I especially enjoyed Abby's reaction and the relationship development between Abby and Trey. Having never met, and being forced together after their aunt's passing was anything but easy. Everything about them was at odds. It really just made it all the more fun to read!

Sweet Romance

February 4, 2015

Format: Kindle Edition

This was such a sweet book.

"For the record, that was not an angry kiss. It was a throw-my-hands-up-in-frustration kiss." That line basically tells you the tone of this book. Abby and Trey dance around each other. Both are stubborn and won't admit that they might have feelings for each other. Trying to work together to save their beloved aunt's book store, fireworks explode, heat sizzles and you won't regret picking up this sweet romance. This really is a clean romantic story. It's not weighed down by sex, you really get an idea of these two characters and see their relationship build. You need to read this.

A true historical romance

July 30, 2013

Format: Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase

This is how historical romance should be! Flashing swords, battling warriors, treachery, misunderstandings, tangled loyalty and love that endures -- Cherish the Knight has it all. I enjoy a strong heroine, and Lexi is certainly that. The hero, Cort, couldn't be hotter and the love scenes are guaranteed to make you melt. The author has done a wonderful job of creating three-dimensional characters and getting us to invest in them. I wanted a happy ending, but there was just enough suspense to keep me wondering if I would get it. I did find myself wishing Guy and Julianna would get together -- but maybe that's another tale. I'll keep my eye out for more by this author.

Well done, my lady!

September 12, 2012

Format: Paperback|Verified Purchase

From the first few pages, I was transported back to another age in time. The characters were very well developed, and even some of the lesser characters had some story to them. The attention to detail in not only the time period, but in the descriptions of the surroundings, buildings, furnishings, plants, clothing, etc. painted the complete picture of where I was and who I was with.

I was sorry to read the last page, as I wanted to follow these characters for a few more of their years.

Looking forward to another one (soon, please)!

About The Author: Diane O’Key can’t ever remember not reading—or writing, for that matter. By the end of eighth grade, she’d written numerous poems and short stories and won an award for having read over 500 books grades 1 through 8. Her lifelong love of storytelling, classical literature, and history—inspired by incredible and demanding teachers—propelled her into a 22-year secondary language arts teaching career, in which her students and colleagues immeasurably enriched her life…though one of her great points of pride—and greatest fears—is that they remember her as OCD about grammar, spelling, and syntax….

Raised on the Jersey Shore, she discovered a deep love of theater (for which she won several awards) and gymnastics in high school. Aided by scholarships and loans, she worked her way through Georgian Court University, and upon graduation with honors and 42 English literature credits, taught high school in Pt. Pleasant and Pt. Pleasant Beach.

Then, she and her high-school sweetheart, now husband, moved to Southwest Florida, where she continued to teach. Married for 40 years, she and her better-half, a retired firefighter, have one grown son, a talented airbrush artist, and divide their time between we-love-winters-in Florida (though they’re there—at least for now—most of the year) and their beloved South Carolina Upstate lake home as often as they can get away.

Her interests include making custom jewelry and bookmarks, snow skiing, baking, and anything to do with the water. A member of SW Florida Romance Writers and RWA for eighteen years, she has two wonderful, multi-published authors as critique partners: the self-dubbed Three Musketeers. Diane writes medieval historical romance, contemporary romance, and romantic suspense.

Writing as she does “in the mist,” without absolute direction or outlines, is both a challenge and a joy. She delights in those moments when the characters pop full-blown into her head, carrying on a conversation. As that pop is rarely the first chapter, however, the struggle begins to write from that point-first backward, then forward. Keeps her awake at night…and life interesting.
