Café Spotlight Interview With Author Alicia Sprinkle

I was born in CT; but I have lived up and down the East coast until the age of 16, when I moved to Williamsport, PA and met my wonderful husband. We currently live in the beautiful state of Montana and have two children, two dogs, and one cat. I am a Registered Nurse, a Children's book Author, and a Library volunteer.

Interview:

What makes you proud to be a writer from Stevensville, MT? I am proud to show my children that they can accomplish whatever dreams they may hold in their heart if they work hard and have persistence. It doesn’t matter where you are from, or the places you have lived, only that you hold the desire to obtain your dreams.

What or who inspired you to become a writer? My childhood was spent in many places up and down the east coast. Much of my time was spent reading books for entertainment. I enjoyed the adventures of traveling into the author’s imagination and experiencing the world from another’s perspective. I can remember dreaming of someday writing my own book and sharing my stories with others.

When did you begin writing with the intention of becoming published? I don’t think I have written with that intention up to this point. I began writing children’s stories for my own children who love to read at bedtime. They love to listen to make believe and magical tales. I wrote them for their enjoyment and began collecting them in a binder. Hoping perhaps someday, they would read them to their children. With encouragement from my family to get my stories published I began the persistent task of finding a publisher.

Did your environment or upbringing play a major role in your writing and did you use it to your advantage? With the fact that my family moved a lot, it was impossible to keep friends for any length of time. So books became my “friends”. I still love books, libraries and bookstores to this day. I feel like a kid in a candy shop when I stop in a book store.

Do you come up with your title before or after you write the manuscript? Usually after I write the story I play around with title ideas until I come up with one that fits and seems catchy.

Please introduce your genre and why you prefer to write in that genre? I write fiction stories for children mainly because I have children of my own, and I love to see their smiling faces when I read them one of my new stories. I also remember having a very vivid imagination as a child and believing in magic and fairy tales. What better audience to have than small children who believe in these wonderful fantasies.

What was your inspiration, spark or light bulb moment that inspired you to write the book that you are seeking promotion for? Actually, my first published book “Lolly and The Holly Berry Tree” was inspired by a dream. I dreamt of “Lolly” and her Holly Berry Tree bakery in rich detail and woke in the middle of the night with her story in my head. I felt compelled to write about “Lolly”. I spent about an hour diligently writing the first draft until it was complete. I felt a deep sense of satisfaction and thoroughly enjoyed writing about “Lolly”.

What has been your most rewarding experience with your writing process? As a new author, seeing my story characters come to life and gaining more self-confidence to continue writing has been personally rewarding.

Have you had a negative experience in your writing career? If so please explain how it could have been avoided? Fortunately, I haven’t encountered any negative experiences so far. But if I do, I will certainly turn it into a learning experience.

What has been your most rewarding experience in your publishing journey? Sharing my publishing accomplishment with my family has been very rewarding. It has also been a gratifying experience establishing connections with fellow authors.

Have you had a negative experience in your publishing journey? If so please explain how it could have been avoided? Nothing negative yet. I try to take the process day by day and consider it all a positive learning experience.

What one positive piece of advice would you give to other authors? Keep writing what you love and don’t lose your desire to get your work published!

Who is your favorite author and why? My longtime favorite author is Stephen King. I have been reading his books since a young teenager. I love reading on the edge of my seat, late at night, afraid of what might be lurking in the dark corners. He is the writing master of bite your nails scary.

Is there anything else that you would like to share with us? Writing has given me the greatest sense of personal accomplishment. I want all children to know that no matter how or where you are raised, you have the ability to be what you wish as long as you keep the fire of desire burning. Don’t let anyone tell you “you can’t” keep trying and give it your best.

My ultimate goal is to write a novel and work hard to get it published. But I have given myself plenty of time to obtain this goal. Right now I am focusing on my children and having fun writing for children.

Who was your favorite author as a child? I loved Dr. Suess books.

What are your hobbies? I love to read, garden, cook, decorate, and visit antique shops. Plus, watching a good scary movie with a bowl of popcorn.
