Meet Author J.L.Mitchell (M/F/M Erotic Romance)

Café Spotlight Interview With Author J. L. Mitchell

J. L. Mitchell is a landlocked beach bum, living in a small, rural town near Nashville, Tennessee; where she was born and raised. She loves taking road trips just as long as that road winds up taking her to the beach.

As a lefty, her earliest memories are of trying art in some form or other. She settled on writing and was hooked from an early age. Yet, it doesn’t come easy. As a child, J.L. spoke, as well as wrote backwards. Her mind is like a mirror, writing from right to left. Turning letters backwards as well. She’s been told it’s some form of dyslexia, but she takes it as just another aspect of who she is.

She’s a voracious reader of most fiction with murder, mystery, and suspense among her favorites. She also loves literary works like, Victorian literature; Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier and The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins. J.L. prefers noir films, like the Thin Man series, Maltese Falcon, and Casablanca; and her all-time favorite; Alfred Hitchcock’s 1940 version of Rebecca.

J. L. can be found most days writing, proofing manuscripts, and writing book reviews.  When she’s not working she’s spending time with her family.

Interview:

What makes you proud to be a writer from Nashville, TN?  Nashville is my hometown. There are so many talented people here, and while most of them are in the music industry, to be able to say I’m a writer from Nashville just makes me proud.

What or who inspired you to become a writer? My parents. They instilled a love of reading. And even at an early age, I had stories to tell. I wanted to be like my favorite writers.

When did you begin writing with the intention of becoming published? In the last three years. I took a year to write my first novel, which hasn’t been published. Then I got this idea for my published novel and it just too off.

Did your environment or upbringing play a major role in your writing and did you use it to your advantage? My southern roots can be found in my books. My women are strong southern women.

Do you come up with your title before or after you write the manuscript? After. It was something like Diamond Desire or Lust, but then I decided to tweak a cliché on diamonds.

Please introduce your genre and why you prefer to write in that genre? I write romance, erotic mysteries or suspense. I would rather write just mysteries, but I kept coming back to the push and pull between male/female characters that were always reminiscent of romance. I couldn’t get away from it. So, I embraced it the romance side, and get to keep mystery along with it.

What was your inspiration, spark or light bulb moment that inspired you to write the book that you are seeking promotion for? Diamonds Aren’t Forever, was written after I’d read too many books with female characters that questioned why men dumped them, they couldn’t find love, etc. I wanted a female character that was strong in that area, but she couldn’t be perfect, had to have some flaw. So I made her a criminal.

What has been your most rewarding experience with your writing process? The most rewarding experience is when all the small points come together. For instance in book 2 of the diamond series, I needed to figure out how the main female character would find out the real identity of the man male character. Once it did, I was relieved and could focus on fleshing out the story.

Have you had a negative experience in your writing career? If so please explain how it could have been avoided? It took me a year to write my first novel. My husband was at home the entire year due to being laid off of work. That was a huge struggle. But once it was finished, and I pitched my story, I had one editor say, I’m just not interested. A nicer let down would have been better.

What has been your most rewarding experience in your publishing journey? Satisfied readers. There’s nothing like a reader who enjoys the book and let you know.

Have you had a negative experience in your publishing journey? Marketing. There’s those who take your money and don’t deliver. If so please explain how it could have been avoided? Vet all marketers. It doesn’t matter if they have good feedback from authors, make sure they take your genre, and ask to talk to several authors that left feedback. That way you can be certain.

What one positive piece of advice would you give to other authors? Keep writing and marketing. If this is your dream, don’t give up for any reason.

Who is your favorite author and why? John Grisham. The man knows how to tell a story.
