Meet Author John Merriman/George Same

Café Author Spotlight Interview With Author John Merriman/ George Same

You is a writer/musician. He was born in London, and lives in the south of England. John was a delinquent when younger, but managed to get an education to see the waste of delinquency. He was heavily involved in punk music for a time. John had a variety of jobs; removal worker, road sweeper, gardener and various office jobs. He now live in Hastings, on the south coast of England. John writes under two names: John Merriman and George Same

*************************

What makes you proud to be a writer from London? I would claim it as a privilege. Being proud suggests I take all the credit for what I do, when I'm as much dependent on the help of others as anyone. Besides, London is a place I have mixed feelings about. I liked the cosmopolitanism. But I didn't like the stress and paranoia.

What or who inspired you to become a writer? I would say those people I've known who actually listened to what I say. As for what - any good story that I learnt something from.

When did you begin writing with the intention of becoming published? Daydreams apart, 2003.

Did your environment or upbringing play a major role in your writing and did you use it to your advantage? Yes in both cases.

Do you come up with your title before or after you write the manuscript? Before - in most cases.

Please introduce your genre and why you prefer to write in that genre? I think of myself as an artist and storyteller first and foremost. I think if I am any good, anyone should be able to read me and get something out of me. Having said that, other people tell me my style is adult fantasy, or magic realism. I don't think of myself as having a style.

What was your inspiration, spark or light bulb moment that inspired you to write the book that you are seeking promotion for? I wanted to write something in the vein of Jorge Borges.

What has been your most rewarding experience with your writing process? Other people talking of the insights they have gained,

Have you had a negative experience in your writing career? If so please explain how it could have been avoided? Asking someone else's opinion. This is not always a mistake. But I needed to learn the balance between confidence and modesty.

What has been your most rewarding experience in your publishing journey? Encouragement from agents and readers.

Have you had a negative experience in your publishing journey? If so please explain how it could have been avoided? The continuous frustration of not getting answers from most people you address a query to. I don't see how this can be entirely avoided, having more patience might make it more bearable.

What one positive piece of advice would you give to other authors? Never give up.

Who is your favorite author and why? J.G.Ballard. He deals with the mundane and turns it into something visionary.

Is there anything else that you would like to share with us? I am a musician also. Anyone reading this who knows of the term post punk, or who likes psychedelia, should do a computer search on - The Lovely Dreggs - if they have a spare moment.

Yxsy Glyxsy - by George Same

This is a compilation of the literary magazine YXSY GLYXSY (pronounced YXSY GLYXSY). Included within are tales about such heart-warming subjects as; -gluttony, vicious dogs, perverted sex, alien abduction, drunkeness, debauchery, drug-addled states, slimy monsters, obsessive love, thuggery, the pursuit of power, the futility of existence, the existence of God, the quest for true love (or at least a one night stand), and a restaurant review. They are short stories of varied length and quality, but with enough to keep the interest going (hopefully).
